This one-hour lecture systematically takes its participants through the colic work-up from start to finish, explaining in detail how findings lead the practitioner to the diagnosis or probability of the causative lesion.  As a technician, it is important to understand the ins and outs of all basic workups in order to help triage and streamline the process for the team, especially when quick diagnosis and treatment can save a patient’s life as well as help keep the veterinary team safe. Highlights of the technician’s role will empower techs and assistants to be more knowledgeable and effective players in future examinations of horses that present for colic.

Jenny Woods grew up in Austin, Texas and has spent all of her adult life in or near Athens, Georgia.  She achieved a BS in Animal Science at the University of Georgia before running a Hunter/Jumper boarding, training, and lesson facility, where a love of teaching was born and the interest in the medical side of the equine world moved to the back burner.    Eventually fate would have it that she fell into a part-time job at the UGA Veterinary Teaching Hospital, and that’s all it took to pave the way to a full-time position, her RVT, then her VTS.  She has now been at the UGAVTH for 17 years, working specifically for the Large Animal Internal Medicine service.  She enjoys every aspect of Internal Medicine but takes special interest in the GI, Endocrine, and Neurologic body systems.  Outside of the hospital, Jenny enjoys all things outdoors, whether it is working on her farm in Commerce, Georgia with her partner and three horses, four dogs, two cows, and chickens, or the occasional canoeing or hiking adventure.  Riding and nurturing relationships with her equine friends remains the most rewarding venture in her life.

Registration is now closed.
