Debbie Martin, RVT, CPDT-KA, KPA CTP, VTS (Behavior) & Natalie Marks, DVM: An Uncomfortable Reality – Recognizing and Addressing Fear, Anxiety, and Stress in veterinary practice

You see it every day; the cat unwilling to come out of her carrier, the dog panting and hiding behind his owner’s legs. Research tells us that owners see it too. Fear, anxiety, and stress (FAS) are not only physically and emotionally damaging for the pet, but they are negatively affecting how we practice veterinary medicine. The good news is that through Fear Free techniques such as utilizing the FAS scale, considerate approach, gentle control, and a touch gradient, we can minimize the level of FAS in our patients and take the ‘pet’ out of petrified and put pets back into your practice!

Kenneth M. Martin, DVM, DACVB: “Nutraceuticals and Pharmaceuticals for Fear Free℠ Veterinary Visits”

There are times we need more than a considerate approach, gentle control and a touch gradient to make the veterinary visit as fear free as possible. This session will discuss pre visit pharmaceuticals (PVPs) and nutraceuticals for Fear Free℠ veterinary visits. Common medications, indications, mechanism of action, and sedation protocols will be discussed.

Joanne Graham, CVPM, SHRM-CP, CCFP: Positive reinforcement – it’s not just for pets!! Communication strategies to encourage Fear Free success

Joanne Graham discusses collaborative methods to communicate Fear Free concepts across the practice team and to your clients. Discover ways to effectively and positively encourage the whole team to adopt new practices, motivate and inspire each other while moving into a new era of Fear Free practices that so positively impact the way we practice medicine.

Case Studies with all speakers: Putting Fear Free into Practice

In the morning sessions, you learned the theory, science, and concepts behind Fear Free. This interactive afternoon session will identify scenarios faced every day in practice. Through audience participation and the expertise of the Fear Free speakers, implementation of Fear Free solutions will be explored. You will discover the secrets to how to start, when to stop, and what to do. The situation for each pet is different, but when you know the basic stopping points, the Fear Free tools, and how to use them, life becomes better for you and your patients. In this practical session, we’ll talk about situations and climb the Fear Free “decision tree.”
